Last Monday (20 June) was the (ELSE) Economy, Learning, Skills and Employment Theme Group 4th Networking and Information sharing event. This was based around the Governments Get Britain Working Initiative and the Work Programme.
The event included presentations on the Get Britain Working measures, the Work Programme Providers Delivery Model & Customer Journey, LEP Skills Strategy , new JCP Online Digital Services and more. Delegates were invited to ask questions to key speakers. Please click here for an overview of the ELSE event and to access all PowerPoint presentations. A great turnout overall and good networking opportunity!
On Wednesday I attended the (RETA) Renewable Energy Technology Alliance, launch event. RETA is a new group for low carbon themed businesses. The event was held in Coventry Cathedral and attended by over 100 local businesses and partners.
The low carbon economy, including renewable technologies represents a major growth opportunity for Coventry and Warwickshire. The formation of the RETA network will ensure that Coventry and Warwickshire businesses design, develop and manufacture the technologies required to meet the new markets that are emerging. This is a real job creation opportunity which will help set a bright, sustainable future for our communities.
One of the main priorities of RETA is Employment and Skills and I felt this event was a great opportunity to network with local employers within this growing sector. RETA is committed to creating new jobs and training opportunities for all members of society, particularly for those who are long term unemployed, they are keen to work with the Recruitment Network. Since the event I have been contacted by various employers to identify opportunities of working together and promoting vacancies on the Recruitment Network website… Watch this space!

On Thursday I was in Birmingham at the ESF Adult Provision event. The event was open to local authorities and third sector organisations across Coventry, Warwickshire, the Marches, the Black Country, Birmingham, Solihull & Staffordshire. The aim of the day was to provide up to date information on ESF provision, help organisations understand the new delivery environment and once the bigger picture is understood, enable informed discussions about how to work together in our local areas to get the best service to our client group.
The event sparked some lively debate from attendees and concerns around where the third sector fits in. A positive outcome for me, however, was the opportunity to engage with the third sector and hear your views first hand, this is something we should be doing more of in the future.
Those who attended the event, feel free to reply to leave your comments on this blog. Click here to read an overview of this event and to access all PowerPoint presentations.
Looking forward, a new ESF/ Department of Work and Pensions programme : Support for Families with Multiple Problems, will be coming through. This is due to go out to tender within the next few weeks. As before DWP will be tendering via its’ framework of providers and so it is likely that the contracts will go to the large providers. However those large providers are contacting local authority leads to identify what activity would be beneficial and make contacts for the delivery of that activity. Currently colleagues in Economy and Community and Children’s Services are either meeting or in contact with potential providers to inform them about the range of services there are available within Coventry… Will keep you informed of any further information or developments.
Have a great weekend!
